In the 19th Century the population of the United States increased from just 10 percent urban to more than 70 percent urban.

According to Anthony Giddens, the concept of "stranger" lost meaning as a result of urbanization -- urbanization created strangers out of everyone since it was no longer possible to take neighbors' beliefs and values for granted.
