Health Communication Settings

The bigger picture. Another context is understanding health communication from an organizational perspective. This includes staff communication, insurance company interactions, and administrator issues. For the most part, as a patient, except for insurance issues, the organizational context is of little importance to you. However, you should be aware that nurses, doctors, and support staff work with each other every day and have formed their unique relationships and expectations for each other. That may influence your care if there are difficulties in their relationships either with each other or with the management of the hospital.

Finally, there is a setting called the mass communication context. This involves mass media health campaigns and health promotion initiatives such as "just say no," or "don’t drink and drive." A great deal of research is done on how to craft TV, radio, and print messages that will influence your health behavior choices. These are designed so that you will make more healthy lifestyle choices. For more information on research in these areas, go to Learn More About Health Communication.
