S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G.: A research tool
|
*Note: When using the word "American" to describe a culture, the word is put into quotation marks to indicate a specific meaning. This is done for many words that have a specific use (i.e. "girls" does not indicate a derogatory usage, but rather a common speech practice among a particular group of women, for instance). Research describing "American" communicative practices refers to people who may call themselves "American" in an overall sense. The practices specified do not always occur, nor does everyone who considers him or herself "American" need to communicate in this way. But, it does describe some patterned practices that have been found to occur broadly for people who might describe themselves as "Americans." |
