I have used Q in a group setting as a way of generating the concourse. I had
my participants individually generate their own Q sort on the subject, then
they came together in groups of 3-4 to try and make a consensus Q sort. As
John rightly points out, during the discussion some viewpoints are
emphasised whilst others are ignored. However, arriving at the consensus
sort is a mean-to-an-end for obtaining the range of different views on the
subject. I have found that the transcription of the discussion has yielded
very interesting concourses, perhaps including some subjectivities that
otherwise might not have emerged if the participant's weren't actively
discussing the subject between themselves. Furthermore, once the Q
concourse has been sampled, the sorting complete and data factored, I have
found the group discussion to be a usefull tool for helping me interpret the
factors.
