Lani, have you read

Barbara Maria Stafford. GOOD LOOKING:  ESSAYS ON THE VIRTUE OF IMAGES.
Cambridge:  MIT Press, 1996.

Sounds like it's right up your alley.  She is an art historian (I think),
but deals with the variety of images that permeate our society, including
internet images.  That text can direct you to many more resources
(including journal articles and essays, books) and methodologies (she
discusses several) that might prove helpful.
