Hi Katie--

The NCA website has an index of graduate programs that ranks them by
reputation in the specific areas of the discipline. It has been told that
it is a bit outdated (because it is based on perceived reputation) but
it's a good place to start. It's at http://www.natcom.org
Also, it's always a good idea when you are looking at PhD programs to
decide who you want to mentor you and go to the school that they teach at.
If there is one scholar who has influenced you more than the rest that
would be a pretty safe place to go to school academically. Obviously
other things like funding, travel grants, number of students, location,
and grad student climate could/should factor into your decision. It's
also a really good idea to go to a convention or two and talk with all the
programs. They all throw parties to meet and greet prospective students.
Let me know if you want to know anything about Illinois (where I am)
specifically. If there are other schools that you know that you are
interested in then I'm sure others on the list will be more than happy to
give you the skinny as it were.

Good luck!!!

ps: I asked the same question you did about 3 years ago and the folks
here at COMGRADS helped me tremendously. I found the perfect school for
me largely due to other grad students.
