Call for Papers: Rock Music on Film and Video Conference

We invite panel and individual-paper proposals for the Rock Music on Film and Video Conference, to be held at Plymouth State University (Plymouth, New Hampshire) October 10-11, 2008.

The members of the conference committee are seeking contributions that examine the diverse uses of rock music in noteworthy cinematic and televisual artifacts, from any historical era and from any area across the globe. Possible topics include (but are certainly not limited to) film sound and the cinematic star vehicle; rock music as subject; rock and music videos; direct cinema, cinema verite, and the "rockumentary"; the rock musical; and rock music as soundtrack and genre device. Participants are encouraged to interpret the conference theme broadly and innovatively. Individual presentations will be limited to 20 minutes in length.

We encourage submissions from scholars, educators, and students at all levels, and from disciplines including anthropology, communication, cultural studies, film studies, history, LGBT studies, media studies, popular culture, sociology, and television studies. Given adequate participant interest and high-quality submissions, we intend to publish selected papers (with author's permission) in a special anthology pertaining to the conference theme. As a bonus, please note that the conference dates correspond with the ideal time to enjoy New England's breathtaking fall foliage!

Persons submitting individual-paper proposals are asked to submit a one-page abstract with complete contact information (name, institutional affiliation, mail and e-mail addresses, daytime telephone number). Panel proposals (featuring three paper-presentations total) should include panel title, brief description of panel theme, name of the panel chair, one-page abstracts of each paper in the panel, and complete contact information for each presenter on the panel (name, institutional affiliation, mail and e-mail addresses, daytime telephone number). In order to be considered, all proposals must be received no later than July 7, 2008.

Please mail or e-mail conference proposals to: Rock Music on Film and Video Conference, Attn: Kylo-Patrick Hart, Department of Communication and Media Studies, Plymouth State University, 17 High Street, MSC 60, Plymouth, NH 03264; krhart@plymouth.edu

For specific inquiries prior to submitting a proposal, please contact Kylo-Patrick Hart at (603) 535-3122 or krhart@plymouth.edu

The Carolinas Communication Association announces the theme for its 2008 conference: Innovating the Future by Re(Visioning) the Past: On the (Inter)Disciplinary History of Communication Studies in the Carolinas. The conference will be held in Columbia, SC, Clarion Hotel, Oct 3rd and 4th, 2008.

Over the past decade or so there has been renewed interest in the study of our (inter)disciplinary history as, in part, a mode of reflection in order to help us grapple with important questions regarding our future; questions regarding research methods and critical approaches, pedagogy, departmental and institutional structure, our relationship(s) to others fields, etc. Thus, working off the excellent forum on the history of Communication Studies issued by QJS last August, CCA seeks submissions of scholarly papers and proposals that might, in some way, deal with the history and future of communication studies, and/or the history and future of communication studies in the Carolinas, from any perspective. We also invite submissions of GIFTS (Great Ideas of Teaching Speech/Communication).

Please submit one copy of the completed paper by electronic submission. That means emailing a submission and attaching a document. To ensure the quality of our conference, each submitted paper will be evaluated through a blind, peer review process; therefore, authors should include identification information in the text of the email or cover letter only. Panel idea submissions should include a detailed abstract (300 words maximum), and a list of panel members. GIFTS proposals should provide a detailed abstract (300 words maximum). Furthermore, to maintain the success of our conference selected authors, panel participants, and GIFTS authors are required to register for and attend the conference in Columbia. Submit papers to Jason Munsell at jmunsell@colacoll.edu. Deadline for submission: July 1, 2008.

Ethnography Division Seminar

PERFORMING UNCONVENTIONAL IDENTITIES

Facilitator:
Dr. Patricia Geist-Martin
Vice-Chair Elect
Ethnography Division

Thursday, November 20, 2008
9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
El Cordova Hotel
Coronado Island, CA

The 2008 NCA theme, "unCONVENTIONal," is designed to promote innovation, creativity, and imagination in program planning. So to continue our efforts as a division to be unconventional, our seminar will be unconventional in location and in theme.

We all perform unconventional identities. But where, when, and how we perform these identities depends. It depends upon the silencing we may have experienced because of the public and political discourse surrounding our identities. Performing Alternative Identities

It depends upon our own hidden desire to perform a dreamed of, imagined, or longed for identities. Performing Sequestered Identities

It depends upon our experience with spoiled, marginalized, or disenfranchised identities. Performing Stigmatized Identities

It depends upon the right place, the right time, the right encouragement for us to perform identities with abandon. Performing Playful Identities

 It depends upon you!

Submission Guidelines
The ethnography seminar will evolve based on what participants portray as their unconventional identities. Think too of how your identities are constructed interactively and how you might invite others into this unconventional identity. There are two ways to participateboth must submit registration form (attached) and fee by July 1, 2008:

1. As an Observer-participant (participate but not submitting a proposal)
2. As a Participant observer
Submit a one-page proposal for a one hour session, describing an unconventional identity that you would like to perform and engage participants in performing for your session. The seminar participants will be invited to perform as a way to learn from and have fun with your proposed unconventional identity.

1. Describe the unconventional identity
2. Describe the interaction participants will be invited to perform and how this can be accomplished in an hour.

3. Indicate your willingness to collaborate with others who might submit a similar session idea
4. Indicate your intention to attend the seminar

While all who submit their registration and fee will be accepted for participation in the seminar, our one day time constraints will lead us to limit the number of performed identities we can accomplish in a day. For this reason, I will be contacting participants to determine if there are ways that participants may collaborate on their one hour session. And if you have a group who together would like to submit a proposal, then list all of their names and contact information.

Seminar Cost
The cost is $95.00 per person. Please send a check made out to Patricia Geist-Martin with attached registration form by July 1, 2008. The cost for the seminar includes all food and materials.

The North Island Ferry comes and goes every 30 minutes from Coronado Island to San Diego and is only $2.50. But it does involve a 10 minute bus or cab ride from El Cordova to the Ferry Landing and once you reach the other side of the bay, the Ferry lets off at the Broadway pier (about a 15 minute walk to the convention center). So if you are up for an adventure, you could stay at El Cordova for the whole NCA convention.
