ICCA10 Workshop:

Mode-free methods for the sequential analysis of (multimodal) interaction

Workshop Instructors: Gene Lerner & Geoffrey Raymond (UC Santa Barbara)

In this 2-session workshop we will introduce methods for analyzing
talk, gesture and body behavior in interaction that are not tied to
the particular mode of production - that is, we will introduce
"mode-free" methods of analysis. The workshop will include brief
lectures, data analysis exercises and an opportunity, in the second
session, to apply the methods to one's own videotaped data. We will
introduce elementary forms of 'action adjustment' that can be found
in talk, gesture, body behavior and object use, and we will apply
these to the sequential analysis of (multimodal) interaction. We will
focus on assimilating descriptions of body behavior into the analysis
of 1. action sequencing (with special attention given to competing
lines of action) and 2. repair (with special attention given to
remediation of 'body trouble').

To receive full consideration, applications for admission to the
workshop should be sent
to Lerner@soc.ucsb.edu by 1 June 2010.
(Later applications will be considered if space is available.) The
application should include a brief description of current research as
well as background and prior training in conversation analysis. In
addition, briefly describe the character of the field recordings you
plan to bring to the workshop. Admission will be limited to allow for
active involvement by all participants.

Session 1: Monday July 5 at 14:30
Session 2: Tuesday July 6 at 14:00
