[forwarded for Jan Servaes]

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to share with you my correspondence with Prof. Gertrude
Robinson, Treasurer of the IAMCR, regarding the payment of the membership
fee for non-North American citizens.
Looking forward to your comments,

Jan Servaes
President of the Participatory Communication Research Section

Dear Prof. Robinson,

May I kindly trouble you with the following problem.
I got your reminder letter informing me that I still haven't paid my
membership fee. That's correct. It's not that I don't want to pay. The
reason is simple:
When I requested my finance department to pay this fee, they told me that
I
would have to pay about $25 more for handling and banking fees to have the
money transferred.
I don't think that my problem is unique. I am sure that many people
outside
of the US and Canada are faced with this problem. In my case it would help
if I could pay through the credit card system. That's the way I order and
pay for books from international publishers, and also pay most of my
international memberships.
Another possibility would be if you or one of your colleagues would come
to
the ICA conference in Chicago. I could pay you in cash.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

Jan Servaes

Dear Mme. Servaes, We are aware that there are a number of countries among
them Belgium, Germany, Great Britain and Japan which have particularly
high
banking charges for transferring money out of the country. The Treasurer
will
make recommendations for possible credit card use to the Executive in
Sydney.
Unfortunately I will not be at the ICA meetings in Chicago. But perhaps
you
could find a US colleague with a checkbook whom you could give the $ 80 US
in
return for them writing you a check, c/o Treasurer IAMCR. Just mail this
check
to me. Thanks for your inquiry and suggestions sincerely, Gee-Gee
Robinson,
Treasurer IAMCR
