If First World members think they have problems with bank charges
when paying membership fees, think of us in the Third World, where
apart from bank charges, Reserve Bank clearances and related
bureaucracy, our exchange rates are so punative as to make membership
a real luxury.
And, to make matters worse, South Africa has been classified by IAMCR
as a First World country, therefore demanding the First World
membership fees. The 25% collapse of our currency against the
US dollar in the past month, mostly caused by First World currency
speculators, means that we may not be able to afford to rejoin IAMCR
in 1997, especially if the slide of our currency continues.
We in South Africa would like some advice on this matter from those
at the head of IAMCR. Surelky there must be some other category we
fit other than First World.
