I'm Brian Murphy checking in from my editorial account at igcnewsdesk.
I teach at Fitechburg State College MA (Communications Media) and I've
just started as research director of a team of 7 undergraduate/graduate
students and professors on the new Media Ownership Project of the media
Education Foundation (Nosthampton). We are building a database that
will allow us to nail down patterns of media ownership change and also
the effects of these changes on "encoding" in its broadest sense (that
includes "content"). One of the first patterns we have been able to
highlight is the trend towards concentration of ownershhip of
peri-urban radio stations since the 1996 Telecommmunications act and
the correlation with the closing of local radio news departments
(replaced by syndicated news).
We should stay in touch.
You can contact me at my "academic" address: bmmurphy@comm.umass.edu
