WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR DISTANCE LEARNING (REF. A5235)

Particulars of Appointment:

Applications are invited for a Senior Lectureship in the Centre for 
Mass Communication Research within the Faculty of the Social 
Sciences.  The post is tenable from 1 January 1999 or as soon as 
possible thereafter. 

The person appointed will be required to administer and lead the 
MA in Mass Communication by Distance Learning.  This innovative 
degree was launched in 1995 and already attracts over 200 
students world-wide.  The successful candidate will be required to 
develop new options and degree pathways, to explore new ways 
of  delivering the degree and demonstrate entrepreneurial drive 
to take the degree into new markets. 

The person appointed will also be required to provide some 
teaching on the residential  degrees, as well as relevant 
dissertation and research supervision where appropriate.  
Research and teaching experience in any area of Mass 
Communications will be  considered.  Ability and willingness to 
work flexibly and to deadlines, and to integrate administration 
and teaching responsibilities, is essential.  Applicants should be 
able to demonstrate strong communications ability, both in 
writing and teaching.

Applicants should preferably hold a PhD in the Social Sciences or 
related areas, and have a well-developed research agenda.  
Teaching and administrative experience at postgraduate level are 
required, and involvement in the development and marketing 
of distance learning education is highly desirable.  The position 
will involve considerable periods of travel abroad.
