THE DEPARTMENT OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION, UNIVERSITY OF
ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, seeks one or more full-time,
tenure-track faculty members at the rank of assistant professor.
Candidates for appointment should have or be near to completing the
Ph.D by the August 16, 2004, starting date. Candidates may be
appointed as lecturer for one year while completing degree
requirements. Salary will be contingent on qualifications and
experience; for a new Ph.D. with outstanding qualifications, starting
salary is expected to be $56,000. Although we are seeking an
assistant professor, in special circumstances, consideration may be
given to more senior candidates with outstanding and exceptional
records of accomplishment, and such individuals are encouraged to
make application.

We seek outstanding candidates whose specialized interests
complement those of our current faculty in any area of communication
research including public and mass communication, organizational and
group communication, health communication, political communication,
and communication and culture. One area of special interest is
communication technologies. This program area is supported by a
state-of the-art collaboratory and other advanced technologies and
facilities, and is home to a number of ongoing sponsored research
projects on workplace technologies, knowledge networks,
three-dimensional virtual immersive environments, wireless
infrastructure development, as well as the use and effects of online
news services.

Candidates must have or show clear promise of developing a
distinguished record of undergraduate and graduate teaching and
research. Successful candidates will join departmental colleagues
having varied disciplinary backgrounds in an expanding unit of 28
graduate faculty. The department supports large undergraduate and
master's programs as well as one of the nation's oldest and most
distinguished doctoral programs.

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received
by October 27, 2003. Applicants should submit a letter of
application, curriculum vita, samples of scholarly work, and evidence
of teaching effectiveness to the following address. Applicants also
should have three letters of recommendation sent directly to:
Barbara J. Wilson; Department of Speech Communication; University of
Illinois; 244 Lincoln Hall, MC-456; 702 S. Wright St.; Urbana, IL
61801-3629. PHONE: (217) 333 2683. FAX: (217) 244-1598. EMAIL:
