Skate-style Cross Country Skiing

Skate-style cross country skiing is like speed skating through the woods on huge blades. You skate fast on the broad hard-snow lanes outside the tracks (the tracks are for regular cross-country skiing). The sport produces a "runner's high" potent enough to substitute for surgical anesthesia.
