Wind Synthesized Electronic Music
"The man that hath no musicke in himselfe,
Nor is not mov'd with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoyles,
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections darke as Erobus,
Let no such man be trusted ...
Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
Recently I've started to work with Yamaha's WX series of "wind
controllers". The WX11 is an electronic instrument played through
amplifiers and external electronic sound modules (synthesizers). It
looks like a high-tech electronic saxophone, has flute/sax-type
fingerings, but can sound like virtually anything from trumpets and
horns, to electronic cello, techno sounds, e-saxophones, guitars, or
original sound sculptures. The WX11 permits greater expressive control
of synthesized music than keyboards because the player can use breath to
add articulation and shape to the sound while it is played. My axe can
also be played loudly enough to blow the hair off your head.
